We packed our suitcases and got a taxi to go to the train station before 9 am on Day 4. The ride to the train station and the train station itself were quite chaotic. First of all, the taxi driver went the wrong way down a one-way street and drove on the sidewalk to avoid a bus! Then, once we got to the station, there was no one to direct you or help you find your train! We finally figured it out, found out what track our train was on and headed there. No train! It arrived a few minutes late – phew!! We found our car, loaded our baggage and found our seats. The seats were quite comfortable and the free snack service came along right when we needed it! We had left Rome behind and were headed for Florence and Tuscany.
The train ride was very smooth and only took about an hour and a half. We got in line with everyone else to get a taxi – we needed one big enough for the 4 of us plus our baggage!
We got a taxi and were off to pick up our rental car and then to the Firenza (Florence) airport to pick up the fifth member of our little group. We had an event-filled ride trying to find the villa and ended up calling the villa caretaker to come lead us there! The villa was Cevoli in the Lari province of Tuscany.
The villa was not what I expected. The front was quite plain. There were 16 cement steps up to the first floor and another 16 up to the bedrooms. After all the walking in Rome, my knees were not happy with me and these steps were not going to be popular. Also, there was no air conditioning. After carrying my suitcases up all those steps, I thought I was going to have a heart attack!! Then I looked at the view out back and my feelings changed. I had never seen anything so beautiful!
